Santa Fe family photography works because of what surrounds you. The adobe walls of the historic district. The open mesa at Museum Hill with the Sangre de Cristos behind you. The cottonwoods along the acequia at Bishop's Lodge in fall. The high desert light at golden hour that makes everything look like it was meant to be photographed. I work in natural light, without poses, and without asking your kids to hold still for longer than they actually can.

How a Santa Fe family session works

Sessions run 45 to 75 minutes depending on the package. We move through two or three locations — usually starting at a spot with good architecture or landscape, then finding quieter moments as the session progresses. I direct loosely. I give the kids something to do rather than asking them to stand still. The best images almost always come from the unguarded moments between poses.

Golden hour — the hour before sunset — is the strongest time for outdoor sessions in Santa Fe from March through November. Early morning also works well and avoids the afternoon wind that's common in spring and summer.

Family portrait sessions start at $500 for 45 minutes with 15 to 20 edited finals. Extended sessions with more time and more images start at $750.
