When to Book a Santa Fe Wedding Photographer

When to Book a Santa Fe Wedding Photographer: Timeline, Availability, and What Happens If You Wait

Wedding at Bishop's Lodge Santa Fe, documentary photography, peak season

The most common regret I hear from couples who reach out late: they found a photographer they loved, checked the date, and it was already booked. In Santa Fe, this happens more than you'd expect. The wedding market here is seasonal, concentrated, and served by a limited number of photographers who work at the quality level most couples are looking for.

I am Casey Addason, a documentary wedding photographer based in Santa Fe. Here is an honest breakdown of when to book and why.

The short answer: 12–18 months out for peak season

Peak season in Santa Fe runs May through October. June through September is the most concentrated stretch — warm evenings, dramatic monsoon-season clouds, and the full complement of outdoor venue options. The photographers who work Bishop's Lodge, Four Seasons Rancho Encantado, La Fonda, Ghost Ranch, and the other top venues book these months 12 to 18 months in advance. If you have a specific date in mind and a specific photographer you want, reach out as soon as both are confirmed.

October and May are slightly easier. Winter weddings (November through April) at indoor venues like The Mystic or La Fonda are available on shorter timelines — sometimes 6 months or less.

What actually fills up first

Not all dates are equal. Saturday evenings in June, July, and August at top venues are the first to go. Once a venue confirms a date, everyone associated with that wedding — photographer, florist, band — gets calls within the same week. The best photographers at those venues are often booked from that single confirmation.

Weekday weddings, Sunday weddings, and off-peak season dates have much more flexibility. A Friday evening in October can sometimes be booked 6 months out without issue. A Saturday in July usually requires 12–18 months.

What happens if you wait

You get whoever's still available, not whoever's best for your vision. For most couples, photography is one of the two or three vendors whose work they'll actually look at for the rest of their lives. Booking late on a caterer is a logistics problem. Booking late on a photographer is a memories problem.

I have had couples reach out 3 months before their wedding after their original photographer canceled. I take those calls when I can. But I can't always say yes, and neither can anyone else with a full calendar.
