Ghost Ranch Elopement: Permits, Locations, and What to Expect
Ghost Ranch Elopement: Permits, Locations, Timing, and What to Expect

Ghost Ranch is the most visually extraordinary elopement location in New Mexico. The red and gold sandstone cliffs of Abiquiu — the same landscape Georgia O'Keeffe painted for decades — provide a backdrop that exists nowhere else in the country. If you want to elope somewhere that looks like nothing you've ever seen, Ghost Ranch is the answer.
I am Casey Addason, a documentary elopement photographer based in Santa Fe. I have photographed at Ghost Ranch multiple times. Here is what you need to know.
Permits at Ghost Ranch

Ghost Ranch is a privately owned retreat and education center operated by the Presbyterian Church (USA). It is not a public land — it requires permission for photography and ceremonies. For small personal elopements, Ghost Ranch typically requires a day-use photography permit. Permit fees and requirements change, so I verify current status before any shoot I book there.
As of 2026, small elopements with 10 or fewer guests have generally been accommodated with advance notice. Larger ceremonies or commercial productions require a separate events permit and coordination with Ghost Ranch's facilities team. I handle permit research as part of planning any elopement I photograph there.
Best locations within Ghost Ranch
The Piedra Lumbre grounds offer the most dramatic cliff views. The afternoon light hits the red rock walls from the west starting around 3 PM, and golden hour — roughly an hour before sunset — is when the cliffs glow. For ceremonies, the outdoor spaces near the main lodge and the arroyo trail areas are the strongest options. The slot canyon trails are more challenging terrain but produce exceptional images.
Timing and light

Late afternoon to sunset is the only time to shoot at Ghost Ranch for maximum impact. Midday light in the high desert is harsh and flat. Plan your ceremony for 4–5 PM with portraits running through sunset. The drive from Santa Fe is 1 hour — account for travel in your timeline.
Ghost Ranch is at 6,600 feet elevation. Wind is common, especially in spring. Afternoons can cool quickly after sunset. Plan for layers.
