La Fonda on the Plaza Wedding Photographer Santa Fe
La Fonda on the Plaza Wedding Photographer Santa Fe
La Fonda on the Plaza is the most distinctly New Mexico wedding venue in Santa Fe. There is no other place in the state that puts you this close to the Plaza, inside a building that has occupied the same corner since 1922, with hand-painted tin ceilings overhead and hand-laid Saltillo tile underfoot. I have photographed events at La Fonda more than a dozen times, and the property rewards photographers who understand how to work with interior light and Spanish Colonial architecture.
I am Casey Addason, a documentary wedding and event photographer based in Santa Fe. This is what I know about photographing at La Fonda on the Plaza.

The Architecture and the Light
La Fonda's most photogenic spaces are the La Plazuela courtyard, the portal along San Francisco Street, the rooftop Bell Tower Bar, and the ornate lobby with its hand-painted furniture and kiva fireplaces. Each location requires a different approach.
La Plazuela is an interior courtyard with a glass ceiling. On overcast days, the light is soft and flattering across the entire space. On sunny days, the contrast between the glass ceiling and the shaded walls is extreme — I position couples near the courtyard perimeter where reflected fill light balances the overhead source. The courtyard works exceptionally well for ceremony and cocktail hour coverage.
The portal on San Francisco Street faces north, which means consistent, soft directional light throughout the day. It is one of the best covered portrait locations in downtown Santa Fe — the ornate ironwork railings, the warm stucco walls, and the open sky above the Plaza create a background that reads as unmistakably Santa Fe without competing with the couple in the frame.
The Bell Tower Bar rooftop is the most dramatic option for portraits. You are looking down onto the Plaza, across the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, and west toward the Jemez Mountains. The open sky means full sun in the afternoon, so I schedule rooftop portraits for the 45 minutes before sunset when the light goes horizontal and warm. On clear evenings, the rooftop at golden hour is one of the best portrait locations in the city.

What I Recommend for Your Wedding Day at La Fonda
If you are getting ready at La Fonda, request a room facing the Plaza — the north-facing windows provide clean, indirect light for getting-ready photography without harsh shadows. The rooms facing the interior courtyard also work well.
For ceremony timing, La Plazuela works well at any point in the day because the glass ceiling diffuses direct sun. If you are using the portal or any exterior space, I recommend ceremony start times of 5 PM or later in summer (May through September) to avoid the overhead midday sun. October through April, a 3 PM ceremony gives you two full hours of golden light for portraits.
The walk from La Fonda to the Cathedral Basilica is under three minutes on foot. I frequently use the Cathedral steps and the gardens of the Cathedral Park for portraits — the combination of the Cathedral's French Romanesque facade and Santa Fe's high desert light creates portraits that are difficult to produce anywhere else in the Southwest.
La Fonda's ballroom and La Plazuela dining room are both challenging spaces for flash-heavy photography. I work primarily with check your datele light and targeted off-camera flash to preserve the warmth of the interior lighting, which gives the images a cinematic quality that direct on-camera flash destroys.

La Fonda Compared to Other Santa Fe Venues
La Fonda is the right choice if you want a venue that is deeply embedded in Santa Fe's history and culture. It is an urban venue — you are in the center of downtown, with the sounds and energy of the Plaza outside the windows. That energy reads beautifully in documentary coverage.
If you want more open land and mountain views, Bishop's Lodge in the Tesuque Valley offers a different aesthetic — wooded grounds, a historic chapel, and expansive outdoor event spaces. Four Seasons Rancho Encantado, north of the city, has unobstructed views of the Jemez Mountains from its elevated terraces.
For couples who want something smaller and more intimate downtown, The Mystic a few blocks from the Plaza offers a boutique hotel setting with strong design sensibility and a more residential atmosphere.

What to Know Before You Book
La Fonda requires vendors to be on their approved vendor list. I am an approved photographer and have worked with their events team on multiple occasions. The venue has a minimum spend for full buyouts and the ballroom books 12 to 18 months out for peak season weekends (May, June, September, October).
For elopements and small ceremonies, La Fonda's rooftop and portal can be arranged for intimate gatherings with shorter lead times. If you are planning an elopement in Santa Fe and want the Plaza as your setting, the area in front of the Cathedral — a short walk from La Fonda — requires no permit for small parties.
La Fonda weddings and events I have photographed there range from 20-person seated dinners in La Plazuela to 200-person receptions in the ballroom. The venue adapts well to both scales, though the photography approach shifts considerably between them.
I offer wedding packages starting at $3,500 for full-day coverage. Elopement packages start at $1,500. For La Fonda bookings, I recommend scheduling a venue walkthrough together before your wedding day so we can map out the specific light conditions and locations you want to use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is La Fonda on the Plaza a good wedding venue for photography?
Yes. La Fonda has exceptional variety — the courtyard, the portal, the lobby, and the rooftop each offer distinct backdrops within a single city block. The Spanish Colonial architecture and hand-painted interiors are difficult to find at any other venue in the Southwest.
What is the best time of year to get married at La Fonda?
September and October are the strongest months photographically. The light is warm and lower in the sky, the crowds on the Plaza are smaller than summer, and the aspens in the surrounding mountains are turning. June and May are also excellent. Winter weddings at La Fonda have a distinct character — the holiday decor and kiva fireplaces create an intimate atmosphere that reads well on camera.
Do you photograph both photo and video at La Fonda?
Yes. Casey Addason Photography covers both photo and video as a package. For most La Fonda weddings, I recommend full-day coverage so that getting ready, the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception are all documented without gaps.
How much does a La Fonda wedding photographer cost?
My wedding packages start at $3,500 for full-day coverage with a second shooter, online gallery, and full editing. Most La Fonda couples invest between $4,500 and $6,500 depending on coverage length and add-ons.
