Taos Wedding Photographer — Northern New Mexico's Best-Kept Secret

Taos Wedding Photographer — Northern New Mexico's Best-Kept Secret

Taos sits an hour north of Santa Fe at 7,000 feet, surrounded by the Sangre de Cristos and the high desert plateau that stretches west to the Rio Grande Gorge. It's quieter than Santa Fe, wilder than Albuquerque, and one of the most photogenic places in New Mexico to get married.

I photograph weddings in Taos regularly. The drive from my Santa Fe base takes about 75 minutes, and every time I make it, the landscape shifts from piñon hills to wide-open mesa to alpine forest. That variety shows up in the photos.

Why Taos Works for Weddings

Taos gives you something Santa Fe can't — scale. The mountains are bigger here. The sky is wider. The town itself is small enough that your wedding feels like an event, not one of a dozen happening that weekend.

The light is different too. At 7,000 feet, the air is thinner and the sun hits harder. Golden hour lasts longer and the colors run deeper — burnt orange adobe against blue-black mountains. For a photographer, it's as good as it gets.

Taos also draws a specific kind of couple. People who choose Taos tend to want something less polished and more real. Airbnb weddings in earthships, ceremonies at the Gorge Bridge overlook, receptions in converted barns. The vibe is editorial without trying to be.

Best Taos Wedding Venues

El Monte Sagrado — The luxury option. A resort built around a sacred spring with courtyards, gardens, and mountain views from every angle. The Sacred Circle is one of the most dramatic ceremony spaces in New Mexico. I have a full venue guide here.

Taos Ski Valley — If you want alpine. The base area sits at 9,200 feet with lifts and peaks behind you. Summer weddings here feel like Colorado without the crowds. Fall weddings get the aspens turning gold.

Private Rentals & Airbnbs — Some of the best Taos weddings I've shot happened at private adobe homes and earthship rentals. No venue coordinator, no restrictions. Just your people, the landscape, and good food from a local caterer.

Rio Grande Gorge — Not a venue, but a location. The bridge overlook is 650 feet above the river. Elopement ceremonies here are short and unforgettable. Permits aren't required for small groups.

Taos Elopements

Taos is one of the best elopement destinations in New Mexico. The Gorge, the ski valley, the mesa at sunrise — all within 20 minutes of town. No venue fees, no guest minimums, no coordination headaches.

I offer Taos elopement packages that include travel from Santa Fe, 2-4 hours of coverage, and a curated gallery. Most of my Taos elopements happen at sunrise or sunset — that's when the landscape does its best work.

For more on elopement locations, check my Santa Fe elopement guide — several of the spots are closer to Taos than Santa Fe.

Planning a Taos Wedding

Travel time. Taos is 75 minutes from Santa Fe, 2.5 hours from Albuquerque. Most guests fly into Albuquerque (ABQ) and drive up. The drive itself is part of the experience — the High Road to Taos through Truchas and Peñasco is one of the best scenic routes in the state.

Season. June through October is peak. July and August bring afternoon monsoons — dramatic cloud formations and double rainbows, but plan indoor backup for ceremonies. September and October are the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, aspens turning.

Lodging. Taos has everything from earthship rentals to El Monte Sagrado. For wedding weekends, book a block at one of the downtown hotels and let your guests explore the plaza, Taos Pueblo, and the local restaurants.

Timeline. Same advice I give every couple — build your day around the light. Ceremony 2 hours before sunset, portraits during golden hour, dinner after dark. In Taos, sunset happens behind the mountains and creates a long, slow glow that's perfect for portraits.
