El Monte Sagrado Wedding Photographer Taos New Mexico

El Monte Sagrado is an eco-luxury resort on the Rio Fernando de Taos, about two blocks from the Taos Plaza. The property is built around water — a central Sacred Circle with a pond and waterfall, cascading water features, and lush garden courtyards that stand in sharp contrast to the surrounding high desert. I have photographed weddings and events at El Monte Sagrado, and the property's unusual combination of tropical plantings and Taos Pueblo-inspired architecture creates photographic conditions unlike any other New Mexico venue.

I am Casey Addason, a documentary wedding photographer based in Santa Fe. Taos is about 90 minutes north of Santa Fe, and El Monte Sagrado is worth the drive for couples who want a lush, resort-style setting in northern New Mexico.

The Property and What Makes It Different

El Monte Sagrado is built on a philosophy of ecological luxury — the grounds are designed to feel like a high-desert oasis rather than a conventional resort. The Sacred Circle at the center of the property has a fountain and pond with mature plantings around the perimeter. The resort's casitas and suites are arranged around the circle, each with interior design that draws from Taos Pueblo traditions: carved vigas, hand-plastered walls, earth pigment murals, and native textiles.

For photography, the lush plantings create something unusual in New Mexico: soft, filtered light under mature trees in an arid environment. Most Santa Fe and Taos venues are working against the high desert light — bright, high-contrast, difficult in the middle of the day. El Monte Sagrado's garden courtyards offer shade and soft fill light that extends the usable photography window significantly beyond the golden-hour-only approach most desert venues require.

The Sacred Circle is the primary ceremony location and the strongest photography location on the property. The water feature provides a soft ambient sound that reads well in video coverage, and the circular design means there is no bad angle for the ceremony photographer — guests and the couple are in a naturally beautiful frame from every position.

Light Conditions at El Monte Sagrado

The mature trees around the Sacred Circle create dappled shade throughout the afternoon. This is both an opportunity and a challenge. Dappled light — alternating bright spots and shadows — is difficult to manage in ceremony photography because it creates uneven exposure across faces. I position myself to work with the overall light direction rather than fighting the dappled pattern, which means I am constantly repositioning during the ceremony as the light shifts.

The interiors at El Monte Sagrado are designed with warm, ambient lighting — carved wooden fixtures, sconces with warm-toned bulbs, and earthen walls that absorb and re-emit warm light. The suites and indoor event spaces photograph beautifully in available light. I rarely need supplemental flash inside El Monte Sagrado because the interior design is built for warmth and intimacy.

For portraits, the resort grounds extend along the Rio Fernando, and there are locations near the river where the cottonwood and willow provide natural frames. In October, the cottonwood color is at its peak in Taos, and El Monte Sagrado's position along the river means the grounds incorporate seasonal fall color in a way that purely built environments cannot.

El Monte Sagrado for Elopements and Small Weddings

El Monte Sagrado's intimate scale — it has fewer than 100 guest rooms — makes it particularly well-suited to elopements and weddings of 20 to 80 guests. The venue is not designed for large-scale productions, and that constraint works in favor of photography. Smaller weddings at El Monte Sagrado move through the property in a more organic way, using the courtyards and garden paths as natural connectors between ceremony and reception spaces rather than being channeled through hotel corridors and ballrooms.

For an elopement in Taos, El Monte Sagrado offers a ceremony setting with a level of design and atmosphere that outdoor-only locations like Taos Gorge or Taos Pueblo cannot provide. If you want nature photography — the gorge, the mesa, the mountains — combined with a refined interior reception, El Monte Sagrado is the strongest base of operations in Taos for that type of day.

I photograph regularly in the Taos area and can combine an El Monte Sagrado ceremony with portrait sessions at the Taos Gorge Bridge, the Wheeler Peak wilderness area, or the Taos Pueblo (with tribal photography permits). The combination of a refined hotel setting and access to some of the most dramatic landscapes in northern New Mexico is a distinctive option that few other markets can match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is El Monte Sagrado a good wedding venue in Taos?
Yes, particularly for intimate weddings and elopements. The Sacred Circle, lush gardens, and resort amenities make it the strongest full-service wedding venue in Taos. The eco-luxury design produces images that are distinct from any other New Mexico venue.

How far is El Monte Sagrado from Santa Fe?
El Monte Sagrado is approximately 90 minutes north of Santa Fe on US-285 and NM-68 through the Rio Grande Gorge. It is about 2.5 hours from Albuquerque.

What is the best time of year for a wedding at El Monte Sagrado?
Late September and October are exceptional — the cottonwoods along the Rio Fernando reach peak color and the Taos area light turns warm and directional. June is also strong. Winter weddings at El Monte Sagrado have a distinct atmosphere — the resort's interior design and heated courtyards make it a functional option year-round.

Do you travel to Taos for wedding photography?
Yes. I am based in Santa Fe and photograph regularly in Taos. Travel within New Mexico is included in my packages. Elopement packages start at $1,500 and wedding packages start at $3,500 for full-day coverage.
